This chicken salad with grapes is the perfect summer salad. Bring it along to a potluck, BBQ, or holiday gathering and serve it up on a crisp lettuce leaf or sandwich bun. I make this chicken salad often and eat it straight from the bowl!
With summer upon us, I eat all different types of salads. Besides this chicken salad, one of my favorite potluck take-along is my broccoli salad. Oh and of course, Nana’s Macaroni Salad!
Chicken Salad with Grapes Recipe
I remember the first time I tried a chicken salad recipe with red grapes in it. I had never heard of this combination.
Ingredients for Chicken Salad with Grapes
- 3 c. cooked chicken (or 3 cans)
- 1 1/2 cups red seedless grapes halved
- 1 cup sliced celery
- 1/3 cup sliced green onion
- 3/4 cup light mayonnaise (you could try substituting Greek yogurt if you prefer)
- pinch of dried ginger
- 1/2 tsp. salt (or salt and pepper to taste)
Note: Many recipes use pickle relish, but I prefer onion and celery. You could certainly use pickle relish if you prefer.
Kitchen Tip:
- For this recipe, you can use a store-bought rotisserie chicken, leftover shredded chicken or cooked chicken breasts. I prefer the ease and convenience of a rotisserie chicken. Simply cut the breast meat off the bird and cut it into cubes. I use the remainder of the chicken to make enchiladas.
- I enjoy eating this chicken salad right out of the bowl, but if you are serving it at a potluck or bridal shower, serve each serving on a bed lettuce.
How to Make Chicken Salad with Grapes
- Combine mayonnaise, ginger, chopped pecans, and salt in mixing bowl.
- Stir in chicken, grapes, celery, and green onion.
Serve on a lettuce leaf or sandwich buns.
I challenge you to go ahead and bring this salad to your next gathering. You’ll get rave reviews and multiple requests for the recipe!

In the photo and instructions in the main article it talks and shows chopped pecans but in the print version there are no nuts at all?????

Hi Gayle! Thanks so much for pointing that out! I have corrected the printable version :)

I can’t eat onions so I leave them out of mine. I like to use almonds, sliced or slivered and for a different flavor occasionally I add curry powder to the dressing. It is delicious!
Tara says
Vertically or horizontally… It’s just a matter of perception ; )
Amanda says
@Anon – You can cut the grapes in whatever direction you like, just don't tell katherine if you cut them horizontally ;)
Anonymous says
should grapes be cut vertically (like Katharine Hepburn suggests) or horizontally before putting them in chicken salad. Katharine Hepburn said that it did not taste right if you cut the grapes horizontally. I read this in one of her books.
Amanda says
LOL Can’t say I’ve ever heard that one!

Your recipe looks delicious! I'm going to try making it for lunch today. My husband and son are a little nervous – the thought of grapes going in a sandwich sounded a little far reaching for them, but I think they are going to love your recipe!
Pottery Monster says
I think people underestimate the use of fruit with protein, and this recipe is a perfect example. The use of sweet is the perfect addition.

This looks so unbelievably delicious!!! My family always puts red grapes in their chicken salad, so now when I try anyone elses' (without the grapes), there's just no comparison in the taste! I can't wait to try your version…it's a little different than how my family makes it!
Erin Orr says
The first time I ever had chicken salad with grapes in it was when I was in college. I just didn't know people put grapes in chicken salad. But I realize now, that most people cut the grapes in half when they go in the chicken salad. Not the food service people at Lindsey Wilson College…there were whole grapes in there. I bit down on one, and felt something explode in my mouth. I nearly puked, because I thought it was a bug! I poked around in the chicken salad and found some more grapes, so that made me feel a little better, but I was pretty freaked out about grapes in chicken salad for quite a while afterward.
