LIQUEUR – We used Patron Resopado for the tequila, and you can use your favorite orange liqueur such as Cointreau, Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier.
JUICE – For the juice, you can use blood orange soda or freshly squeezed blood orange juice. Blood orange soda is great for when blood oranges aren’t in season, and it adds a bit of bubbly carbonation to the cocktail.
SYRUP – Below, we’ve included a recipe for simple syrup. Make it homemade or use a premade bottle from the store.
RIM GARNISH – For this blood orange margarita, we opted for red sugar to rim the glass. You can certainly use salt if that is your preference!

- Take one blood orange slice and smooth around the rim of a margarita glass to dampen the edge.
- Dip rim of the glass in a container or shallow bowl of red sugar, turning until edge is coated.
- Set glass upright and fill to top with ice cubes.
- Mix blood orange soda, tequila, orange liqueur, simple syrup, and the rest of the ice cubes in a cocktail shaker, shake well.
- Strain liquor mix into the margarita glass.
- Top with a slice or two of blood orange for garnish.

To Make the Simple Syrup
- Stovetop – Combine water and sugar in heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Stir the sugar and water mixture continuously until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and pour into heat-safe container intended for long-term storage.
- Microwave – Combine water and sugar in microwave safe bowl. Heat on high for 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds or until sugar is dissolved. Cool.
