TWD: Grandma’s All-Occasion Sugar Cookies

I’ve been so busy with work that I haven’t been able to participate in Tuesdays With Dorie for a few weeks. I’ve finally gotten into a good swing I think and was able to make this week’s recipe, Grandma’s All-Occasion Sugar Cookies, chosen by Ulrike of Kuchenlatein.

I have to say that I was really happy with the flavor of these cookies, very yummy! On the flip side, I HATE refrigerating dough over and over again just to be able to work with it, what a pain! So, here’s what I did:
I separated my dough into two pieces as suggested, one for slice and bake and one for rolling and cutting.  After the initial chilling time of 2 hours, I sliced the slice and bake and made those, easy enough.
Next I rolled out the other half of the dough, but I rolled it thicker than suggested, and cut those out with cookie cutters. Of course I had to chill them before I could transfer them to the cookie sheet *sigh*
With the scraps from the dough, I used my cookie scoop. I didn’t feel like chilling it again and waiting again, so I scooped out balls of dough, rolled them in my hands and then dipped one side in green sugar and the other side in red sugar. I placed the balls on the cookie sheet and hoped for the best.
After cooling I decorated in several ways:

  • slice and bake: half I used some leftover Caramel Icing from my pumpkin cookies. YUM, these were my favorite. The other half I drizzled with confectioner’s glaze and sprinkled them.
  • shapes from cookie cutters: I tinted some leftover cream cheese frosting I had from a flopped apple cake recipe I never posted (LOL) with green, red and blue food coloring. Spread that on the shapes and sprinkled.
  • rolled balls: these turned out great. All I had to do with these was transfer to the cooling rack :)
I will definitely make this recipe again, but will probably stick with slice and bake and rolling them. They taste wonderful and were nice and chewy!

What a great variety of festive cookies! Your cut outs look great, but the slice and bakes are pretty too! I’m with you — it’ll be hard to go back to the more labor-intensive cookie cutter method when we know that log slicing is available! Beautiful cookies!

Your cookies look great! I love how the little ball cookies turned out! I put my dough in a ziploc bag and rolled it out before the first chilling. That could save you a chilling step.

Talk about the variations! The coolest thing is that now you know (and we do too) how the different shaping methods turn out. I love the balls, and will have to keep them in mind. With my luck, they’d roll around and spread so the red is on top of the green…
