Sesame chicken is a widely popular Chinese stir fry dish here in America. It’s similar to General Tso’s chicken but sweet rather than spicy or tangy. It’s complemented by a mixture of diced ginger, red wine vinegar, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and topped with broccoli and sesame seeds and an optional addition of peanuts. Here I’ll show you how to make your own homemade version of the classic take-out sesame chicken!
Sesame Chicken Recipe
We certainly don’t shy away from the amount of stir fry we eat in our household! It’s something the whole family has always enjoyed. Whether it be served with a heaping of our favorite chicken fried rice or classic white rice, we just can’t seem to get enough.
I can’t wait to share with you this sesame chicken recipe. It’s dressed with a tasty sauce that’ll have you coming back for seconds!

How to Make Sesame Chicken
- Mix all sauce ingredients together and set aside.
- Place chicken pieces into the batter you made earlier. Stir to coat completely.
- Fill the wok halfway with canola oil and bring to 370-380 degrees. Deep fry chicken pieces, adding one at a time, until golden brown, about 15 minutes.
- Remove chicken and keep warm.
- Remove oil from wok and wipe out with a paper towel. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil (or canola oil) and stir fry broccoli and peanuts until broccoli is tender-crisp about 3-4 minutes. Add the sauce and stir gently until it bubbles.
- Add chicken and stir to combine, coating chicken pieces with the sauce.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve over a bed of rice.
I usually make some sort of Chinese dish 3-4 times a month. It’s definitely a favorite in our household! One of my very favorite Chinese dishes is Moo Goo Gai Pan the combination of chicken, mushrooms, and vegetables makes this dish ultra satisfying and one that I always come back to!
Another go-to recipe is my Chinese Pepper Steak. This is one that the entire family loves and is put into the menu rotation pretty often.

- 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 2 tsp cornstarch
