Loaded Coffee Smoothie for Breakfast
I got into the whole healthy smoothie thing a few months ago when I moved in with my boyfriend. Suddenly I was making breakfast for two with a time limit of about five minutes, and that’s when I discovered the beauty that is a smoothie.
A nutritionist by trade, I like my smoothies to be healthy and energizing, but being a night owl at heart, I needed something that required little to no effort in the morning. So when I came up with this Loaded Coffee Smoothie, I knew I was onto something big.
Here’s what you’ll need for a coffee smoothie:
- 1 banana, previously sliced and frozen
- ½ cup (120 mL) strong brewed coffee, chilled
- ½ cup (120 mL) milk (any variety)
- ¼ cup (25 g) rolled oats
- Optional: spoonful of nut butter
You’ll also need a good blender! We use Blendtec, but there are lots of options out there.
The only real forethought required for this recipe is remembering to freeze the banana and brew the coffee the night before. Peel the banana, slice it, and stick it in the freezer. This will be the creamy base to our delicious liquid breakfast. You’ll also need to brew some coffee and set it in the refrigerator to chill. Then in the morning all you have to do to make this delicious coffee smoothie is throw everything into a blender and blitz!
If you’re feeling especially motivated you can throw in a spoonful of your favorite nut butter for a punch of protein and healthy fats, or sprinkle on some shaved chocolate for added decadence. This coffee smoothie balances a deliciously sweet coffee flavor with a powerfully filling and energizing boost, making it perfect for sipping on slow mornings or slurping down while you’re on the run!
Oh, and if you’re a Starbucks fan, you might want to try these homemade mocha frappucinos!

Amanda, as soon as i’m able, plan on trying many of your wonderful cake/bread recipes, but tonite, being the huge cafr drinker that i am, made this one! did add 1T of flax, used coco milk which isnt my fav, but noone in this area has had unsweetened vanilla almond milk for awhile, but its quite nice, maybe could have used some honey!
thx for all your recipes:): kelli

Can you replace the nut butter with the Nut butter powder?
Amanda Formaro says
Yes, just mix it according to the bottle instructions. It’s usually 1 part powder and a little less than 1 part water.
Monique says
Yes you can. What I do is I make my smoothie. Put it in the freezer for about 1/2 hour. Then I put it in the fridge overnight. Ready in the morning
Jackie says
Can you substitute the rolled oats for steelcut oats?
Amanda Formaro says
I have a feeling steel cut would be too rough on your blender and wouldn’t break down well, leaving you with hard chunks in your smoothie.

I get up before my parents at 5am and I don’t like to make a lot of noise in the morning so I try and set up everything the night before. Can I make the smoothie the night before???
Amanda Formaro says
You could, and then stir in the morning! Let me know how it goes!
April says
Is there a substitute for the banana in the smoothie? I’m severely allergic to them and it seems every smoothie has them.
Amanda Formaro says
Hi April! You can use yogurt. A good non-banana smoothie base is yogurt, milk and fruit :)
Glenis says
Is there another option to the oats? I’m Coeliac so can’t have them in my diet?
Amanda Formaro says
Hi Glenis. You can just leave the oats out and throw in a handful of ice if you like. There’s no need to substitute unless you have a favorite grain you’d like to try. Some options might include quinoa, buckwheat, or amaranth. But please check with your doctor before trying any grains you aren’t familiar with.
