This 3-ingredient peanut butter cups recipe takes a creamy milk chocolate shell filled with a mixture of smooth peanut butter and powdered sugar to make an easy homemade version of your favorite store-bought candy.
Why this recipe works
Peanut butter cups are pretty similar to chocolate peanut butter balls, but instead, they’re made in good old fashioned peanut butter cup form right in a cupcake liner and only require 3 ingredients to make.

Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions
CHOCOLATE – You can replace the milk chocolate with dark chocolate if preferred. You may also use a milk chocolate bar and chop it up in place of chips.
PEANUT BUTTER – For peanut butter, we’d recommend regular peanut butter over natural butters as they’re a bit too runny to use as filling. You could try your hand at cashew butter or almond butter but have not tried it ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips
Keep your peanut butter cups in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They can be chilled in the fridge for up to 5 days or frozen for 1 month.
Serving Suggestions
Wrap the peanut butter cups up in a cellophane bag or in a box with other goodies to give as edible gifts around the holidays. If you’d like, sprinkle the top of the cups with sea salt or a drizzle of peanut butter, milk chocolate, or white chocolate.
These cups are delicious served chilled, frozen, and at room temperature but you will want to make sure they’re kept in the refrigerator while they sit to avoid the chocolate from melting.

Why bother with the sugar versus just using plain peanut butter?
Amanda Formaro says
Plain peanut butter would not have the integrity to hold up on its own. Powdered sugar thickens it and gives it the texture it needs.
