Quick and easy cheese and pretzel broomsticks are always a hit at Halloween parties! With only 3 ingredients, these witchy broomsticks are a fun and healthy snack for kids and adults alike.
Why this recipe works
String cheese, pretzel sticks, and chives come together to make this bewitched appetizer, but this time, they’ll fly into your mouth instead of off into the dark night. All jokes aside, these cheese and pretzel broomsticks would make a fun addition to a Halloween charcuterie board or to simply serve as a festive snack to the kiddos.
We made these broomsticks a few years back at a Halloween party along with our spiderweb taco dip and witch finger cookies and they were among the first to disappear. They looked super cute alongside other spooky Halloween finger foods and treats and were incredibly easy to throw together with three ingredients and 10-15 minutes of prep time.

Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions
CHEESE – You can use whatever kind of string cheese you prefer for this recipe. Mozzarella and cheddar are the classics, but Colby Jack and twists are also fun!
PRETZELS – Regular sized pretzel sticks work perfectly here.
CHIVES – Chives are very thin and can break easily under tension. Be careful when tying them in a knot. I always like to have a little extra on hand in case they break as I’m tying.
How to Make Cheese and Pretzel Broomsticks
These step by step photos and instructions are here to help you visualize how to make this recipe. You can Jump to Recipe to get the printable version of this recipe, complete with measurements and instructions at the bottom.
- Begin by cutting your string cheese sticks into three sections each.
- Using a knife, slice vertical lines up the bottom of each section, mimicking the look of a broom. You can cut about halfway up the cheese, but be sure to leave the top portion of the cheese intact so it doesn’t fall apart.
- Tie a chive in a knot around the base of the cheese stick, then double knot it to secure. Be careful doing this step as the chive can easily break with too much tension.
- Attach a pretzel stick to the top of the string cheese base.
EXPERT TIP – If you find that your pretzel sticks are breaking, or they are breaking the cheese as you add them, try using a toothpick to create a small hole before adding the pretzels.
