This easy crockpot green bean casserole recipe combines fresh green beans and crunchy French fried onions in the slow cooker to help free up oven space on Thanksgiving.

Why this recipe works
A good crockpot green bean casserole recipe comes in handy when you’ve been tasked with bringing it to your Thanksgiving gathering because it’s portable and can keep itself warm. It also makes life a little easier when there’s a big juicy roasted turkey taking up most of the space in the oven.
This crockpot version has all the same classic ingredients as your staple green bean casserole recipe, the only major difference is that it’s cooked and assembled entirely in the slow cooker. Prep it and set it, that’s really all there is to it. You don’t have to sweat it with this one. It will take less than 10 minutes to get it up and going while the crockpot does the rest of the work.

Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions
GREEN BEANS – Canned beans are not recommended for this recipe as they have a different taste and texture than fresh beans, plus, they will cook much quicker.
CREAM OF MUSHROOM – If you’re not a fan of cream of mushroom soup then you can always switch it out for for either cream of chicken or cream of celery.

- Spray the base of your crockpot with non-stick spray.
- Trim the ends of your beans and cut them in half or thirds (depending on the length). Then, add them to your slow cooker along with 1 ½ cups of the French-fried onions, 3 cans cream of mushroom soup, whole milk, onion, salt, and ground pepper. Mix well to combine.

- Cook on HIGH for 4 hours or until desired tenderness of beans. Top with the remaining French-fried onions and serve.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips
The green beans will continue to cook if kept on either low or high heat, so be sure to switch the crockpot setting to warm when not being eaten. This should help prevent the green beans from overcooking and getting mushy as they sit.
Store cooled leftovers in an air-tight container kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, place in a preheated oven at 350 F for approximately 15 minutes or until warmed through. Or you can pop it in the microwave.
I would not recommend freezing this dish due to the cream-based sauce which can separate or cause it to become grainy.

Serving Suggestions
If you plan on transporting your crockpot green bean casserole then I would recommend holding off on adding the remaining French fried onions on top until you are ready to eat. That way the fried onions stay nice and crispy.
To keep the French-fried onions crispy on top, leave the lid off the slow cooker after serving. Enjoy!

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.

Do the fresh beans need to be partially cooked before adding to crock pot ?
Amanda Davis says
No, the crockpot will cook the beans without any blanching or par-cooking needed. :)

Have you or anyone else tried this on low? I will be serving at a community Thanksgiving dinner and would need to start it earlier. Thank you~~~
