Cake mix waffles with crisp golden edges and a buttery fluffy center are made with only 4 ingredients – your favorite cake mix flavor and the ingredients on the back of the box!

Why this recipe works
Cake mix waffles are my trick for bridal showers, baby showers, and brunch parties when I need to make a large batch for a crowd. They’re just as fluffy and soft as the kind you make from scratch but you can whip them together quickly in just about any flavor you can get your hands on. All you have to do is combine it in a bowl, mix, and pour it into a waffle maker. Easy peasy, and a great way to use that cake mix that’s been sitting in the cupboard for a while.
There are so many different ways to use a box of cake mix, from cake mix donuts to cookies, brownies, and even waffles like we’re making today. It definitely makes things easier when you don’t have to spend extra time measuring out individual ingredients.

CAKE MIX – We made this recipe using funfetti cake mix (which is great for birthday breakfast), but you can use any flavor to make your own waffles. Red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and carrot cake among so many different flavor options would all work!

- Preheat the waffle maker in addition to preheating the oven to 250°F.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cake mix, eggs, water, and vegetable oil.
- Lightly brush the surface of the waffle maker with vegetable oil (or cooking spray) to prevent sticking.
- Using a measuring cup, spoon the batter into the waffle maker, making sure to spread the batter close to the edges. My waffle maker took ¾ cup of batter.
- Cook until the steam has stopped (about 3 minutes, depending on the type of waffle maker you have). Check to see if the waffle is golden in color. If not, continue cooking, checking it every 30 seconds, until the desired color is achieved.
- Transfer the cooked waffle to a wire cooling rack and place in the oven to keep warm (and prevent it from getting soggy) while making the remaining waffles.
- Serve the waffles with whipped cream, maple syrup, and sprinkles, if desired.
Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips
All waffle makers have slightly different capacities. To avoid the batter from overflowing, it is best to fill the waffle maker about three-quarters full as the batter will expand during cooking.
Cooled leftover waffles can be stored in an airtight container or ziptop bag in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For a nice crispy texture, reheat them in a toaster or the oven at 250°F, rather than microwaving them.
Yes, these waffles freeze well. Cook as normal and allow them to fully cool before transferring them to an air-tight container or freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. Pop them in the toaster or in a 250F oven to reheat.

Serving Suggestions
Serve your cake mix waffles topped with either a pat of butter or whipped cream, fresh berries, syrup, and extra sprinkles. Or, you can drizzle with a simple powdered sugar glaze by adding a tablespoon of milk to a cup of powdered sugar. Give it a good stir and adjust the ingredients as needed to make your glaze thinner or thicker until you reach your desired consistency.
