Last year I made these fun Cookie Monster Freakshakes and to go along with them we also have these adorable Cookie Monster and Elmo cookies. My Elmo Freakshakes go hand in hand with both recipes and make a cute birthday party or “just because” treat that kids will love.
Elmo Freakshakes
These “freakshakes” are so much easier than you’d imagine. We basically take some vanilla ice cream and a little bit of red gel food coloring (or you can use strawberry ice cream), mix it together in a blender and top it off with some adorable (and also easy) Elmo cookies! Layer the rim of the glass with some frosting, add some sprinkles, and you have super cute Elmo freakshakes!
These Elmo freakshakes use simple store-bought sugar cookies and frosting. It doesn’t take much skill to create something as cute as these believe it or not!
Kids will love these for a Sesame Street themed birthday party, for a sleepover, or as a surprise treat. I guarantee they’d love to help create these themselves as well! You can have the kids decorate the glasses and cookies while you blend up the milkshakes. Even the big kids will like them. ;)

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR THE MILKSHAKE
This recipe makes 2 milkshakes, double or triple if you’d like more*
- 5 scoops vanilla ice cream of your choice (or strawberry)
- Reddi Whip whipped topping
- Multicolored sprinkles
- Red gel food coloring- make sure you use the gel (not liquid) food coloring, the color is much more vibrant.
- Vanilla frosting
- 1/2 cup milk
- Parchment paper
FOR THE ELMO COOKIES:
You can find the full printable recipe for the Cookie Monster and Elmo Cookies here.
- 1 package of refrigerated sugar cookies- you can certainly make your own sugar cookies as well!
- Red gel food color
- Butterscotch hard candies
- Tub of white/Vanilla frosting
- Edible jumbo candy eyeballs
Making the cookies
You can find out how to make the Elmo Cookies here. This should be your first step, as the cookies will need time to bake in the oven and cool off before applying the frosting and adding to the top of the milkshake.
We used refrigerated Pillsbury sugar cookies because they were quick. You can also use store bought sugar cookies, or make your own from scratch.
It’s a simple process. Mix some red gel food coloring with vanilla frosting. Then, apply the frosting to the sugar cookie and whisp upwards with a butter knife to create that fluffy-haired look.
Add some edible eyeballs and place a butterscotch candy on for the nose and you’re done! Super easy.
Decorating the milkshake glass
Take your milkshake glasses and spread on a layer of frosting to the top portion of the glass.
Grab your sprinkles and pour a handful on a flat surface or shallow plate. Dip the rim of the milkshake glass onto the sprinkles.
Take any remaining sprinkles and sprinkle them over the frosting.
Place your milkshake glasses in the freezer for a few minutes to give them a quick chill. This keeps the frosting and sprinkles from falling off.
Making the milkshakes
Add your 5 scoops of vanilla ice cream and 1/2 cup milk to a blender.
Then add your red gel food coloring to the blender as well. It’s best to add a small amount at first, and if you are unhappy with the color outcome, add a little more.
After giving the glasses a little time to chill, fill the glass with your blended milkshake, add whipped topping to the top, and more sprinkles!
Then place your finished Elmo cookies neatly on top of the whipped topping.
These freakshakes are super adorable and very simple to make. I hope you have a blast making these!
They also make great Instagrammable material!
