Deliciously smooth but bold and robust, this espresso martini is all the rage for all the right reasons. Vodka, coffee liqueur, and espresso combine with ice in a cocktail shaker to create that signature frothy coffee taste.
Why this recipe works
A properly made espresso martini is rich and bold in all of its coffee-flavored decadence. This cocktail is an all-in-one that can be enjoyed as an after dinner drink or served as a dessert cocktail paired with something sweet on the side.
It’s no wonder this 1980’s cocktail has sky-rocketed in popularity over the last few years. I’ll leave it at the fact that most people didn’t know what they were missing out on. Invented by Dick Bradsel, this striking cocktail is the perfect sipper with a pick me up.

Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions
LIQUEUR – For a classic espresso martini you will need both vodka and coffee liqueur, most popularly Kahlua, though any coffee liqueur will do the trick if you have one you prefer the taste of such as Tia Maria (widely used in White Russian cocktails) or Mr. Black Cold Brew. For a creamier base to your cocktail, you can use a cream coffee liqueur.
COFFEE – Brew in an espresso machine and allow it to chill in either the freezer (be careful with glass cups), in the refrigerator, or at room temperature to take the heat off before adding to the other ingredients. You can also use cold brew concentrate in place of espresso. I do not recommend using instant espresso for this recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips
The trick to a nice frothy topping is to use a good quality espresso and to brew it straight in an espresso maker that you allow to chill for a bit before adding to the drink. The espresso, once shaken vigorously, will create a lovely frothy layer on top.Â
Serving Suggestions
Espresso martinis can be served for Valentine’s Day, girls night, book club, or enjoyed as an all-around after dinner or dessert cocktail.
This is a cocktail that speaks for itself and doesn’t need anything to compliment it, though, a rich slice of cheesecake or a cheese board would make a nice addition on the side.
