Classic Chex Mix seems to be a staple from everyone’s childhood. A salty, crunchy, addictive snack that’s awesome for treat bags, on-the-go, and for parties. I love the classic version best, but Taco Chex Mix is right up there too!
Why we love the original
Raise your hand if you remember your mom pulling a cookie sheet full of salty, delicious Chex Mix out of the oven! I know I do. It’s one of those recipes that everyone knows how to make, even the kids. I used to help my mom mix everything together and spread it onto the baking sheet.
This is the original Chex Mix recipe that I would read aloud to my mom from the back of the cereal box. Kids and adults alike love it. Football watch parties wouldn’t be complete without a big bowl sitting on the food table. It’s an awesome snack to pack in school lunches too.
Ingredients you will need:
Everyone knows how to make this, but most don’t have it memorized. So print it off and tape to the inside of your kitchen cabinet!

- A combination of Corn Chex, Rice Chex, and Wheat Chex cereals are used, but you can use just your favorite if you want!
- The original recipes calls for mixed nuts, but peanuts by themselves are fine too.
- I usually use bite-size pretzel twists, but pretzel sticks are a common substitution.
- Some people say the garlic-flavor bite-size bagel chips are their favorite part!
- Unsalted or salted butter is fine as is margarine.
- For the seasonings you’ll beed Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder.

This recipe was new when I was a kid. Nobody had ever heard of bagels, much less bagel chips. It’s yummy enough without those!

Just for the proverbial record. The very first original Chex mix used pretzel sticks. Wheat, corn and rice Chex and peanuts. Only. Now I love the bagel chips or the rye chips, but they are not original to the very first published recipe. 👍🤗♥️
