Why this recipe works
We love a good deep fried appetizer, but we definitely don’t enjoy all the oil involved with making them.
That’s why air frying is such a great option for making your favorite fried appetizers like our air fryer mozzarella sticks, and these air fryer fried pickles! It eliminates the hot oil, and even the batter needed to make them. Cutting time, fat count, and grease is a bonus in my book.

COATING – To give air fryer fried pickles a nice crunchy coating we’re dipping them in an egg, all-purpose flour, and panko bread crumbs that’s seasoned with garlic salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika. For a keto-friendly alternative, you can substitute your flour with almond flour, as well as substitute the panko bread crumbs with pork panko.
PICKLES – We’re using Bread and Butter pickle chips which lean on the slightly sweeter side, however, dill pickle slices are also great when it comes to fried pickles. It’s important to note that if you choose to use spears instead of slices, your cook time will be longer.

- Drain and dry pickle chips on a few paper towels. Dry as best as possible.Â
EXPERT TIP: Drying your pickles is an important step, if you don’t soak up the excess juice from the pickles, your coating may not stick well. - Add the garlic salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika to the flour bowl and mix. In a separate bowl, beat the egg. In a third bowl, add the panko breadcrumbs.Â
- Dredge the pickles in the flour mixture, then into a bowl with the beaten egg, and lastly into the panko breadcrumbs.Â
- Spray the air fryer grate with cooking spray. Lay the pickle chips in the basket so as not to overlap. You may need to do this in batches. Lightly spray with cooking oil.Â
- Air fry at 385F for 5-7 minutes. Serve with your choice of dipping sauce.

Made this up using my pampered chef air fryer….I did two trays at a time, we loved how crunchy they were and we paired them with a garlic aioli dipping sauce. Only thing I found was I needed to double my pinko bread crumbs , I had enough seasoned flour ( you could also add your seasoning to the bread crumbs ) and my egg was an XL so I had enough.

This recipe turned out to be so terrible to make and the product itself was very mediocre. On top of that, the amount of things I needed was wildly inaccurate, as I found myself continuously adding more egg and bread crumbs because I just kept running out of them. Overall, not a very fun nor worthwhile experience.

If you’re looking to make fried pickles like you would get from a restaurant please do not use bread and butter chips. They will be nauseatingly sweet. Use the dill pickle chips or spears and it works just the same.

These were awful. They were dry and bland. Even doubled the spices once I had mixed in the recommended and it was still tasteless. They didn’t taste anything like any fried pickles Ive ever had.

Bread and butter pickles are more on the sweet side. Sweet pickle slices or dill pickle slices will work.
