This Christmas, you can skip the candles – our mulled wine recipe will leave the house smelling amazing as it warms your glasses and tickles your tastebuds!
Mulled Wine Recipe
Mulled wine is a time-honored holiday tradition dating back to the Roman age.
Wine was warmed to battle against the harsh European winters, while spices were added for their ability to promote health and avoid sickness. Sweeteners were added to offset the unpleasant taste of cheap wine – which was much more abundant than good wine.
Mulled wine’s popularity faded out for a few centuries, except for in Scandinavia where it went by its other name, glogg. However, it is enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to old-fashioned Christmas markets.

I kept this mulled wine recipe pretty traditional – but I do urge you to use a good-quality wine. It doesn’t need to be expensive, but if you wouldn’t drink it plain, don’t add it to your mulled wine recipe. I used a $9 Portuguese wine in this recipe and it was absolutely perfect.
I did use a variety of citrus fruit to add a bit more depth of flavor (and add some much-needed color to these dreary winter days). Feel free to stick to traditional clementines or oranges, and adjust the spices to your personal preferences. I used star anise because it’s traditional, but I’m not a fan of it myself and will likely leave that out next time I make this for guests.
The spices used in a traditional mulled wine are very similar to a chai tea, so I think a chai dessert would pair exceptionally well with this winter cocktail. Check out our Chocolate Chai Poke Cake to accompany your mulled wine.
