Grilled Asparagus Recipe
Learning how to cook asparagus on the grill is really easy. It’s a delicious side dish for any grilled protein, even hamburgers! I love asparagus and eat it at least once a week.
While thinner, smaller spears are fine for oven roasted asparagus, it’s better to use thick asparagus for the grill. It’s too easy to lose thinner spears through the grates and they can burn easily.
Here’s the thing. While there are more complicated recipes out there, this isn’t one of them. I mean, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
Toss this nutritious veggie in olive oil and season with salt and pepper, that’s all the prep you will need to do. You can squeeze a little fresh lemon juice on the cooked, tender asparagus spears, but that’s up to you.
Ingredients you will need
- I use extra virgin olive oil, but a more bold variety works great as well.
- It probably goes without saying, but fresh asparagus is a must, don’t use the frozen variety.
- Kosher salt is my preference, but sea salt or pink Himalayan salt would be great too!
- Fresh ground black pepper is way tastier than the boxed option.
Helpful kitchen tools:
- I use an outdoor grill, but have also owned an indoor grill which is a great alternative. This one is both!
- Shallow baking dish
- Tongs
- Serving platter

- Preparing asparagus for the grill isn’t any different that cooking it inside. Trim off the woody ends and place the spears into a shallow dish large enough that they can lay flat.
- Drizzle with olive oil and season to taste with Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper. Toss to coat.
- Once the grill is hot, open the lid and add the trimmed asparagus to the grill. You should hear a sizzle when the oiled spears hit the grates. if you’re wondering how long to grill asparagus, it isn’t long! Only 3-4 minutes per side for thick spears is all that’s needed.
