Air fryer chocolate chip cookies are prepped in 10 minutes and baked in the air fryer for 8 minutes, making them quick, easy, and so delicious!
Why this recipe works
We’ve adapted this air fryer chocolate chip cookies recipe from our Chocolate Chip Pudding Cookies. The secret to perfectly soft cookies is the pudding mix that’s added here.
One thing that’s so great about air fryer cookies is that instead of forgetting to turn the oven off, the air fryer shuts off on its own. So it’s safe for kids to come home from school and pop a few cookies into the air fryer. Of course, it’s also great for portion control and feeding that sweet tooth a little at a time.

FAT – This recipe uses unsalted butter as well as shortening. If you prefer to replace the shortening with butter, you can substitute equal amounts.
SUGAR – Like with most cookie recipes, you will use both granulated white sugar and light brown sugar.
FLOUR – While a standard chocolate chip cookie uses all-purpose flour, if you have bread flour in your pantry you can use that instead!
CHOCOLATE – While we usually use semisweet chocolate chips, any other chocolate chip variety or flavor can be substituted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Adding pudding mix to cookies makes them soft, chewy, and moist. The cornstarch in the pudding mix contributes to the softness. All the fundamental elements everyone looks for in a chocolate chip cookie!
Softened butter does not mean the butter should be soft. Softened butter is butter that has been removed from the fridge and allowed to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Enough to take the chill off. You should be able to make a dent with your finger without it sinking into the butter.
Yes, you can use chocolate chips, mint chips, white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, and chocolate chunks, among others.
Yes, to freeze cookie dough roll dough into balls and place on a wax paper lined cookie sheet. Freeze for a couple hours until hard, then place in a freezer bag. To bake frozen cookies, remove from freezer and let thaw for 15 minutes, then air fry according to recipe directions.
We like to use the air fryer as an alternative to using the oven especially during the hot summer months. Plus, in many cases, it’s a lot quicker than preheating an oven. - ½ cup unsalted butter softened
- ½ cup shortening butter flavored or regular
- ¾ cup granulated white sugar
- ¾ cup light brown sugar packed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 2 ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ⅛ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 3.4 oz instant vanilla pudding mix
- 12 oz semisweet chocolate chips
Things You’ll Need
Before You Begin
- Do NOT preheat your air fryer with the parchment paper in it. The circulation acts as a fan and sucks the parchment paper up, causing a fire hazard. If you ever smell “marshmallows” and you’re not doing anything with marshmallows in the air fryer, something is burning. Turn off your unit, allow to cool and check the heating element.
- These ooey-gooey pudding cookies have a caramel-like texture inside, but its vanilla of course. The pudding really is the key factor in taking this recipe over the top. They get puffy in the air fryer and then as they cool, become crisp on the outside, but maintain their gooeyness inside. They will look thick and smooth when removing from the air fryer and are delicate to the touch. You MUST let them cool and firm for 5-minutes at a minimum before moving them. It’ll be hard to resist, I know!
