Crispy crunchy wonton cheese sticks are so easy to make. Tucked snuggly inside a wrapper that’s rolled in panko breadcrumbs and parmesan, these mozzarella sticks deliver both texture and flavor!
Why this recipe works
Wonton cheese sticks are made with either egg roll wrappers or wonton wrappers and string cheese. With an additional coating of panko and parmesan, they have the most satisfying crunch met with a melty cheese center. Serve up these wonton mozzarella sticks on any occasion with a side of marinara or pizza sauce for an appetizer everyone will go crazy over.

WRAPPER – Egg roll wrappers vary in size. The wrappers we used were wide enough to accommodate a whole stick of string cheese and big enough to roll two each. If yours are smaller, you can cut the string cheese in half then wrap. Keep an eye on the sticks while deep frying as they may be done quicker in the fryer.
COATING – The panko breadcrumb coating is optional, but we love the additional crunch it gives, similar to a classic mozzarella stick. You can easily omit the coating and fry the wonton cheese sticks as is.
How to Make Wonton Cheese Sticks

- In a medium bowl, combine panko bread crumbs, grated parmesan cheese, and parsley. Spread mixture onto a plate.
- Using the same (now empty) bowl, whisk the egg and 1 tablespoon of the water together.
- Cut each egg roll wrapper in half.
- Add enough oil in a deep-sided skillet to come about 2-inches up the sides. Preheat over medium-high heat until instant read thermometer reaches 325 F.
- While oil is preheating, place a cheese stick onto one of the egg roll wrapper halves. Roll up halfway, tuck both open ends inward. Dip your finger into the water and run it along the edges of the egg roll wrapper. Continue rolling and gently press the wet end to help seal it. Repeat for all cheese sticks.
- Roll wrapped cheese stick in the egg wash, ensuring all sides are coated. Roll egg-washed stick in panko mixture until coated, gently pressing to adhere the crumbs. Move breaded stick to a wire rack and continue with the remaining sticks.
- Using tongs, add breaded sticks to the hot oil and allow to cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes. Turn sticks over and cook an additional 2 minutes, or until golden brown on both sides.
- Remove to a wire rack and serve immediately with our homemade pizza sauce.
