Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions
SWEET POTATO – We like to use Jewel sweet potatoes when making fries. They’re firm but sweet, perfectly suited for making fries. Choose firm, medium-sized sweet potatoes that are free of soft spots or sprouts.
OIL – We are using olive oil but you can swap it out with another high-heat oil like vegetable, avocado, canola, or grapeseed oil.
SEASONINGS – Sweet potatoes don’t need much more than some salt and pepper. You can choose your favorite flavored salt, regular table salt, sea salt, or Kosher salt to sprinkle them with. We used a combination of pink Himalayan and truffle salt.

- Preheat air fryer to 380 F.
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into sticks. Place into a large bowl.
- Combine the olive oil, salt, and pepper in a small bowl and whisk to combine.
- Pour the olive oil mixture over the potatoes in the bowl. Using gloved hands, toss to coat all the potatoes.
- Add a single layer of potato sticks to the air fryer basket.
EXPERT TIP – You can certainly cook all the fries at once, however, you will end up with limp potatoes. They will still taste fabulous but will not have the typical “French fry” crispness. We loaded our basket up a little more than just a single layer because we like ours to be a little softer. It all comes down to preference. - Air fry at 380 F for 7 minutes. Shake the basket and air fry for an additional 7-8 minutes. Repeat for remaining fries.
Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips
Your sweet potato fries likely aren’t getting crispy in the air fryer due to crowding in the basket. The air fryer relies on proper air circulation to evenly cook the food that’s inside, otherwise, it ends up steaming your food instead of baking it. Try removing some of the fries from the basket, allowing space between some of the fries, then give them a few extra minutes to crisp up.
Store cooled leftovers in an air-tight container kept in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat them in the air fryer using the reheat function.
Serving Suggestions
All that’s left to do is to pair these air fryer sweet potato fries with a dipper like ketchup, ranch, marshmallow fluff, french fry sauce, or sriracha mayo for a spicy kick. These fries go well with anything from burgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, roast beef sandwiches, patty melts, and everything in between.
