Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions
CRUST – A 12-inch store-bought pizza crust makes this dish convenient and easy. However, you can always make your own homemade pizza dough if preferred!
MEAT – You can use ground beef, ground sausage, or ground turkey here. For a dash of heat, try adding cayenne pepper to the ground beef mixture, drizzle the finished pizza with hot sauce, or sprinkle with red pepper flakes. You will only end up using about 3/4 of the meat on top of the pizza. You can top the pizza with the entire pound of ground beef if desired, but it may feel like too much. Or you can save the extra to make a salad the following day. Use your best judgment.
SALSA – Any kind of store-bought salsa works well, both chunky and smooth. It will give the beans a boost of moisture, otherwise the refried bean layer ends up being fairly dry.
TOPPINGS – The additional toppings are up to you. Shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, black olives, sauteed peppers or onions, and sour cream are all great options. Optionally drizzle the top of the pizza with hot sauce, salsa verde, or even restaurant style salsa. For a little crunch, top with crushed Doritos or tortilla chips.
