Take one blood orange slice and smooth it around the rim of the margarita glass to dampen the edge.
Dip the rim of the glass in a container or shallow bowl of red sugar, turning until the edge is coated.
Set glass upright and fill to top with ice cubes.
Mix blood orange soda, tequila, orange liqueur, simple syrup, and the rest of the ice cubes in a cocktail shaker and shake well.
Strain liquor mix into the margarita glass.
Top with a slice or two of blood orange for garnish.
To Make the Simple Syrup
Stovetop - Combine water and sugar in heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Stir the sugar and water mixture continuously until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and pour into heat-safe container intended for long-term storage.
Microwave - Combine water and sugar in microwave safe bowl. Heat on high for 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds or until sugar is dissolved. Cool.

You can garnish your rim with either salt, regular sugar, or red sugar.
Easily make this blood orange margarita into a frozen cocktail by placing all ingredients into a blender. You may want to add additional ice depending on the consistency you are looking for.
