Nothing says summer like a refreshing pina colada! A classic drink bursting with fresh summer flavors, I’m going to show you how to make a real pina colada recipe and leave the mixes at the grocery store!
Pina Colada Recipe
This pina colada recipe is inspired by my childhood Hawaiian summers when I learned how to swim by visiting my dad at the hotel’s pool bar. The bartender sometimes rewarded my efforts by making me a virgin version of this drink with extra cherries and of course, a tiny pink parasol.
Despite my Hawaiian memories, pina coladas actually originated in Peurto Rico and are best served with rum! They can be made with or without ice, but if you do add ice, make sure to grind it really tiny – to almost a slushie texture.

Ingredients for pina colada:
- 1/4 cup coconut cream (not coconut milk)
- 1/2 cup pineapple juice
- 5 oz dark rum
- 1/4 cup pineapple, optional
- 1/2 cup ice, optional
- Garnish: pineapple wedges, cherries, parasols, etc.
Things you may find useful:
- Place all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth. Taste and adjust to your preferences, adding more juice or coconut cream.
- Pour into a glass and garnish as desired.
- Makes two delicious pina colada cocktails.
This recipe brings a taste of the tropics home, just break out the blender and mini parasols and your porch will be transformed into an oasis in moments, no matter what the weather.
