Whatever Weekend: How the Cat Came to Be

I don’t usually post things about my family on this blog. I generally try to stick with recipes that I have tried and want to pass on to others. However, of the few times I have shared something about my kids or home life, it seems to be well received. Of the many blogs I visit, I find it fun to read about and see people’s kids, their families, seems like a nice way to get to know those who make and bake all the yumminess I see out there. :)

So I have decided that since I don’t usually post any recipes on the weekends anyway, I will post something random on the weekends. If you just want the recipes, no biggie, just ignore these weekend posts. I will still be posting plenty of eats during the week, but figured I could post about “whatever” on the weekend.

Hence the name: Whatever Weekend.

I have a little story to tell you about the adorable face you see at the top of this post. About a month ago… ok wait.  I should probably start by saying that my husband is not a big drinker. We like to have a few beers when we go camping in the summer, but overall he doesn’t really drink. What does that have to do with a cat? Well my friends, let me tell you…

About a month ago, hubby told me that his friend Cliff was having a birthday. His 70th birthday. Holy cow! I couldn’t believe Cliff was turning 70, after all we are in our 40′s, seems an odd pair of friends doesn’t it? This is someone hubby has known for about 20 years, since before our kids were born. A friend he met through his love for muscle cars. They used to go the auctions and car shows, along with several other buddies. Over the years time spent together has dwindled considerably, so when hubby said he wasn’t coming to Cliff’s birthday party, Cliff was visibly upset. He gave hubby a hard time and told him he better show. ;-)

So on the way out the door, knowing he had to work the next day, he said he was just going for an hour or so, no drinking, and coming right home. Out the door he went, that was around 5:00. About 10:15 the door opened. I was watching TV with one of my boys. My son was able to see my hubby come in the door, but from where I was sitting, I couldn’t. The next thing I hear is my son:

“Dad what is that? Is that A CAT? Dad, whose cat is that?”

Um, WHAT? A cat? We already have 4 cats, why are you bringing home another one???

He stumbled up the stairs, inebriated, carrying an orange tabby cat in his arm, cradled like a football.

Are you kidding me???

First of all, don’t worry, hubby got a ride home. Obviously, so did the cat. And he’s been here ever since. It took some time for my other cats to get used to him, but they are getting there. My dog, Angel, became immediate buds with the new feline and they can often be found sacked out on the floor, close to each other, snoring happily.

He super friendly and very easy going, and what a cute face, eh? ;)

The story is that the cat showed up at Cliff’s house a few weeks before that night. They had been feeding him outside, but wouldn’t let him in. The cat kept trying to come in, but the guys were shooing him away. Hubby has a soft spot for cats. The orange fluff ball started rubbing on his leg and followed him to the car, so he picked him up and brought him home. I guess it was his lucky night.

Temperatures were very low that night, and the following week they were in the single digits. The pads of his feet looked pretty rough, probably from being out in the cold, he had several cuts on his face, had a throaty cough, and he was very bloated. After some tender loving care, he’s doing marvelous and looking great.

Oh his name? That was another story. He’s had several names over the last few weeks:

Taz
Ollie (for Oliver)
Red
Big Red
Red Man
Orange Cat (haha)
Fred

He answers to “Kitty Kitty” ;)

As you can see from the following pics, Angel likes him, and he likes her back. Cool friendship.

What a gorgeous gorgeous cat. I adore cats but am sadly allergic to them. But I love them. "Whatever Weekend" is a great title for a Saturday post. I am starting a series of mini-posts for weekends called "Postcards from…" and oops it is Saturday night and I've still not posted yet. I'd better press on. See you soon!

Amanda, what a sweet thing your hubby did for the kitty. Grumpy would have done the same thing. I had no cats when I met him. He brought one with him and we have had a total of 5 (just not all at the same time!) in the 10 years we have had together! We are down to 3 now.

I love that you are sharing a piece of you!!

What a darling tabby! We have one just like him named "Eddie." You will find a name that will fit his personality ~

I can so see my husband doing that. He is a sucker for a pretty feline face. (Better cats than women, I suppose!) The number of cats we have currently is approaching illegality, so no more for us. I'm always amused by the names tradesmen who come to the house give the cats, my favorite being "Butch" for our huge, boulder-headed tom. This ginger fellow will tell you what his name is sooner or later. What a darling.

Great idea to post stuff like this on the weekend!
Fun story, cute kitty. We had a cat like that, orange tabby, but was very fluffy! His name was Sammie. My cat growing up was named Scottie and we had another named Sammie. And yep, I have a son named Scottie now and a Sammie! And nope, I did not name my sons after our cats! ;)
And sadly, now, I'm VERY allergic to cats.
    I like Red, just Red!

Well I so enjoyed your story and he's a beauty and the relationship between he and Angel is wonderful.

As a child my cat was called Kitty Prize. Because she was prize for me for being good. When presented to me I said, "Oh what a good Kitty Prize."

Maybe Hops or Barley would be good names to consider… to remind you always of the fun story of the condition your hubby was in when he decided to add a member to your pet family!

You've warmed my heart with your story…I WILL be reading your weekend posts!
    Smiles,
    Onalee

Haha! I'm glad to hear that your hubby is a sucker for kitties like mine is. That's how we got our first kitty.

I love the pictures of Angel and Kitty Kitty (if you are a Y&R watcher, there was an orange and white kitty on there recently with the same name).

I also love the suggestion of naming her Hops or Barley! Too funny!

Good Luck with your new kitty. By the looks of things, she has already settled in nicely.

Love your cat story. We have a German Shep named Angel also and my husband brought in a stray kitten (approx 6 weeks old) from the neighbor's garage. Angel licked her clean on one side, rolled her over with her nose and proceeded to clean her other side. They have been best buds now for 5 years. Enjoy and thank hubby for the rescue.
