This week’s Tuesday with Dorie recipe is The Perfect Party Cake, chosen by Carol of mix, mix… stir, stir. If you would like the recipe for this fabulous cake, go to Carol’s blog or turn to pages 250-252 in Baking From My Home to Yours.
I actually made this cake back at the beginning of May. I made it for my birthday. My husband laughed and said “You aren’t supposed to bake YOUR OWN birthday cake!”
Why not?
I didn’t want a Dairy Queen ice cream cake, much to the disappointment of my husband and daughter. I wanted the Perfect Party Cake, but with my favorite flavors, lemon and orange. Mmmmmm. So, I had to make it myself, but that’s ok, I wanted to!
Instead of the preserves specified, I used sweet orange marmalade and lemon curd, alternating layers. I also didn’t use the coconut on the outside of the cake, I chose to smooth out the buttercream frosting and decorate with nonpareils. Wherever the recipe called for lemon juice or zest (I can’t remember and am so rushed to post this I can’t check back in the book) I substituted with orange juice/zest.
I absolutely loved this cake, however the buttercream is just TOO buttery for me. It was so buttery it was slippery. LOVED the cake as a whole and will definitely make this again! (Happy birthday to me two months later LOL!)
Oh, and in case you are wondering about the weird circular pattern on the top of the cake… I had spread the top nice and smooth and then accidentally dropped a nonpareil in it. So I carefully tried to remove it, and made a dent. Smoothed that out and DID IT AGAIN! Sheesh! Well I just couldn’t fix it, so I made lemonade from lemons and made the top in a circular pattern. LOL
Sorry for the gabillion pictures, but this was a fun recipe to photograph!

Yum! pretty much sums it up…
I'm so happy this was such a hit for you! It looks so beautiful and adorable with the nonpareils.
It's a food blog…there are never TOO many pictures!! The cake looks great and I love the circular pattern on top. Cool. I seem to always make my own birthday cake, too. I never even thought of putting little sprinkles or nonpareil on top. I think my boys would love that!
Happy Birthday to you…a little late, but it still counts! This is the perfect party cake. I love your subs in the filling as I used the rasp jam and it smooshed into everything else, so it didn't look as nice as Dorie's. This cake has so many variations, and your decorations were lovely.
I really like how you used the sprinkles around the edge to decorate! Very creative and pretty! :)
How pretty! It reminds me of funfetti cake – but a grown-up version :)
This looks so pretty, I love the nonpareils. Lemon curd sounds perfect in this cake!
What a beautiful cake.
I am soooooooo with you on the Dairy Queen cakes.
I used cream cheese icing on mine…
What a pretty cake, gorgeous pictures!
Your cake looks wonderful!
It looks so pretty with the sprinkles and the zest in the center. Love the circular pattern too!
Very nice pictures and great looking cake. I also made my own birthday cake and I like that. This way you can have exactly what you want!!!!
Your cake is gorgeous! I love the way you decorated it.
What perfect looking birhday cake! Mmm, orange would be good! Happy Belated!
OOOOO!!! Pretty cake. And Happy belated Birthday.
I made mine for my Birthday too (the week before) and used lemon curds.
Great minds, girl, great minds….
Yours looks so-o-o-o-o-o delicious.
I love the sprinkles on the edge!
Looks delish! And I love the sprinkles – so cute! :)
Wow! This is the perfect cake for anytime!! The dough looks so soft and the filling is decadent! Perfect! Just perfect!
No apologies needed for too many photos of this gorgeous cake! I'm glad you had the cake you wanted for your birthday, even if it meant making it yourself.
That looks like a perfect birthday cake to me! I am such a sucker for sprinkles, just looking at them makes me smile. And, the orange marmalade sounds like such a perfect flavor for the middle of the layers. I'll have to remember that next time.
LOL – happy birthday to you! I think your version sounds delicious (love citrus) – I found the raspberry jam on buttercream way too sweet. I actually like the circular pattern on top – your cake looked lovely.
the swirl on top looks intentional!! great job :)
I would take this cake for my next birthday…Gorgeous!!!
I love your cake! It looks so sweet! I also like to make my own birthday treats…it's kind of like my birthday present to myself. I bet it was delish!
If you hadn't said I totally wouldn't have known that the swirled top wasn't done on purpose.
Happy belated birthday! :))

I like it a lot… the decorations definitely say "party" to me. Happy Birthday!
LOL, I've had my share of DQ ice cream cakes on my birthday.
OMG your cake is awesome! I think the best looking one I've seen so far!
Makes me so very happy looking at it!
Your cake IS the perfect party cake! :)
Love your cake, Amanda! Those sprinkles on the edge are so pretty. And the way you bake, I completely understand wanting to make your own birthday cake. Good for you!
What a fun cake! I like the way you decorated and would never have known you were covering up. We all do it. Ha! Especially with sprinkles and coconut flakes! I love making my own cake. Then, I know I will like it or if I don't, I do not have to complain cause I did it!
My son would have loved your cake! As far as he is concerned, everything should have rainbow sprinkles of one kind or another on it. :)
That is on gorgeous birthday cake! I think when you bake and are regularly baking things especially for other, there is something really fun about making your own cake exactly as you want it! I'm with you on the buttercream – I made this once with buttercream and while I am sure it was great buttercream, I just don't think buttercream is my thing.
I also found the buttercream too buttery. but this is now my go-to white cake batter. Yours turned out beautifully. Glad you enjoyed!
Your cake is beautiful, I have to make this. Sorry for my absence Amanda work was killing me! I have to look back on your other posts cause I no I've missed alot!
The cake looks luscious. The recipe is almost identical to Southern Living's recipe for basic vanilla cake (I made cupcakes out of the recipe, post coming soon.) It is absolutely the best cake recipe I've ever made, partly because of the low-protein flour and buttermilk, but also because the flour is sifted three times. It's so light, moist and flavorful.
I love looking at lots'O'pictures~ plus yours looks very pretty. Even if you did have to make it for your own birthday. Perfecto~ Love the flavors as well.

Happy (very belated) birthday! Your cake is so cute and festive! I love the orange substitution, and I agree-the buttercream was too, too buttery.
Looks so yummy! I love lemon and orange, too…I believe it was delicious! I make my own cakes, too…cakes from the store just aren't worth eating. :)
Lemon and orange…my kind of PPC! The frosting and nonpereils look great. Good for you for making your own birthday cake – that way, you get what you want!
Happy belated birthday to you! And good for you for making your own cake! Your orangey version sounds superb and looks perfect.
