TWD: Caramel Crunch Bars

This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie pick was chosen by Whitney of What’s left on the table? She chose Caramel Crunch Bars on page 112-113 in Dorie Greenspan’s book Baking: From My Home to Yours.

I thought this recipe was pretty tasty, but I’m wondering if I baked mine too long as mine were crisp for the most part. I did some with the toffee bits and some without.

They tasted good, but the ice cream sandwiches were way too hard to eat.
Overall they were good, none of them were wasted, but I think if I made them again I would bake them for a shorter period of time. This was a very easy recipe to put together as well!

Now while I have all you TWDers here (wink wink) I’d like to invite you to join me for Thrifty Thursdays! Please see the post below this one for details, hope you will join me!

Mine were really crisp too, so I don’t think you baked them too long. But they sure came out great!

Your bars look great. YUM! I agree, the ice cream sandwiches were hard to eat. I ended up splitting them like an oreo and eating each half separately.

Your crunch bars look fabulous Amanda!! I loved these a bit too much I'm afraid. They were so crunchy and buttery. I didn't have any toffee bits so used M&M's! Very colourful to say the least! I bet those ice cream sandwiches were wonderful!!

Yours look great! I had read the P&Q and only made a half batch so I was real careful about how long I left mine in…I think I probably took mine out a little early. But they are nice and chewy. Your ice cream shot looks yummy!

Amanda your bars look amazing. Mine turned out more on the chewy side because I don’t think I baked them long enough. They were also a bit greasy thanks to the underbaking. Good on you for doing the ice cream sandwiches though. In my head I was going to do them, but the follow through just wasn’t there.

    Yours almost look like brownies.

Maybe you did bake them to long.

I wasn’t quite sure on the baking time, but I did 20 minutes, and the batter was bubbly and ‘percolating’ so I pulled mine out.

OOOHHH!!! Look at all that Chocolatey deliciousness. They don’t need ice cream to be just perfect.

After making those myself… I can imagine that in fact, those ice cream sandwiches must have been hard to eat indeed! Although, super tasty!

We were going to eat them with ice cream — although not as sandwiches — but there were just too many desserts. I bet they’d be delicious broken up over ice cream.

Mine were crisp, but not dark. I omitted the espresso. Maybe that could be it. They look great. I will probably include these on next year’s holiday plates. They were just so easy and GOOD!

Mine were crispy, but not too crispy. I do think I’ll cook them for less time next time, though, like you.

I love that you ate them with ice cream (or tried to anyway) – that ice cream sandwich photo in the cookbook was definitely tempting to recreate!

i think i baked mine a tad too long as well. i did halve the recipe and used a smaller pan, did you do the same? still delicious even if overdone, especially as ice cream sandwiches. mmm.
